Lucknow takes a spot on the UNESCO World’s Culinary Map
Lucknow isn’t just a city you visit — it’s a city you taste. And now, the world is officially taking notice. On 31 October 2025, UNESCO named Lucknow as a Creative City of Gastronomy, placing it among a global network of cities celebrated for their cultural creativity and identity. The announcement came on World Cities Day, making it not just a proud moment for Uttar Pradesh, but a major win for India’s culinary heritage on a global stage.
In simple words: Lucknow’s food is no longer just a local treasure — it’s now a global badge of honour.
This recognition shines a spotlight on the city’s iconic Awadhi cuisine, known for its depth, elegance, and royal roots. Lucknow is the kind of place where cooking isn’t rushed and flavours aren’t loud — they’re layered, refined, and thoughtfully built. It’s a culture where food is treated like art, and every dish feels like it has a story to tell. From smoky, melt-in-your-mouth kebabs to fragrant, perfectly balanced biryani, the city has long been famous for recipes that don’t just fill your plate — they stay with you.
What makes this milestone even more significant is that Lucknow becomes the second Indian city to earn this title after Hyderabad, which was recognized in 2019. That means India’s presence in UNESCO’s gastronomy space is expanding, and cities are now being celebrated not only for monuments and history, but for what’s being cooked, served, and shared every day.
But this honour isn’t only about delicious food. UNESCO’s Creative Cities Network is about how creativity shapes communities, livelihoods, and sustainable growth. With this designation, Lucknow isn’t just being applauded for its past — it’s being encouraged to build its future using its culinary strength. That includes supporting chefs, street vendors, food artisans, homegrown businesses, and local culinary traditions that have survived generations.
The network itself is massive, with 400+ cities across 100+ countries, spanning fields like gastronomy, film, design, literature, music, and crafts. So when Lucknow joins this circle, it’s not just a headline — it’s an entry into a global conversation. It opens doors for cultural exchange, food tourism, innovation, and collaboration with other creative cities around the world.
In a time where fast food is everywhere and trends change overnight, Lucknow stands out as a reminder that food can still be slow, soulful, and deeply rooted in identity. It represents a world where the kitchen is culture, and the dining table is tradition.
Today, Lucknow’s story is bigger than recipes. It’s about heritage, creativity, community pride — and a legacy that deserves a global spotlight. And now, thanks to UNESCO, the city isn’t just famous in India anymore.
It’s officially a name the world will remember — one unforgettable bite at a time. 🌍✨
